Lake Arthur Walleye

Postby dank14740 » Mon May 18, 2009 8:56 am

Can anyone point me in the direction of the old road bed at the bottom of Lake Arthur, or any other area on the lake that might produce walleye for drifting with worm harnesses?

There a few different roadbeds that run under lake arthur. The two largest ones are the old 422 road bed which starts down in Big Run and runs all the way up to just before you get to the dam. One place I like to fish on this road is just east of the little island, right out in front of the the boat rental. Fish from that island down to the point by the beach and back.

The second large road bed that runs under the lake is the old Rail Road bed. It's starts up in muddy creek and runs the length of the lake as well. Best spot to try is right in front of Davis Hallow Marina. I have in the past also caught walleyes out of the creek channel out in front of Davis Hollow.

Just try and mark some bait holding close to the road bed and keep working it. If the bait is there, the walleye shouldn't be too far away. Also note that the fish will sometimes be right on top of the road, normally at night or really early in the AM, and sometimes there on the edges. You will have to move around a little to pin point where they are at.

The park office at one time had photo copied maps with all the road beds and creek channels on it. I would stop by there the next time you are out and see if they still have them. You could also get a hotspot map. The local tackle shops as well as most wal-marts or dicks sporting goods would have them. They are really nice and will give you a great idea on where to start.

The color of choice out there seems to be chartreuse or chrome blue. Good luck and if you have anymore questions just let us know.

Post us some pictures and let us know how you make out.

Thanks for the help. I'm hoping to get out this weekend and test out those patterns as long as the weather looks good. I'll post anything worth a look.

I had a little luck yesterday with the walleye. We were fishing for striper at dusk along the roadbed by the old 422 launch and we caught a couple of 20" walleyes on jerkbaits. The if you start by the launch and see where the road goes into the water you can easily follow that roadbed for about 1 mile on that shoreline. That is one of my favorites when it comes to walleye and striper.

I haven't had the chance to get out to lake arthur yet with the penguin's doing as well as they have. This weekend is shot because of the games on sat. and sun., but I'm hoping to get out for an evening outting. I mapped out the patterns that you suggested. I was thinking about trolling with bottom bouncers and worm rigs. Have you had any luck with that approach?

I hear ya. I haven't made it out much either as of late.

Yes the crawler harness on a bouncer should produce for you, just make sure you are working it nice and slow. Also watch the finder and look for the bait.

I tried the old 422 road bed with no luck. The wind was blowing pretty strong so we had to start back around the swimming area and drifted back to the old 422 launch. We didn't mark any fish on the way out, but we decided to give it a go anyway. We kept a steady drift along the road bed, but like I said nothing seemed to be biting.
In all honesty I only recently started targeting walleye because I enjoy the taste, so I'm really just warming up on how I need to catch them. I also just bought a new fishfinder, so I'm getting used to it as well. I won't stop trying for the walleye up at lake arthur and if you have any other suggestions I would love to hear them. Thanks!

I'm sure if you keep with it you will get on them and find the right spot to catch them. The bait is really important out there when fishing the road beds. When you find the bait the fish will not be far away.
