When color doesn't matter...

Postby Greg Evans » Wed Apr 14, 2010 3:28 pm

Overall I had a tough day of fishing this past Saturday, with the exception of a half hour or so when a school of nice bass decided to move out of the creek channel and onto the adjacent flat. They were all nice fish, and the school pretty much ran from 3-4 lbs. We did have one 2-7 and a 15" thrown in.

These fish would not touch anything but a crankbait, but color did not matter. The first fish came on a bluegill DT10, and that fish actually broke off by splitting the crankabit in half?!?! My buddy reeled in the lip and the top half while the bottom stayed with the fish. After that he put on a parrot color DT10 and I used a chrome/blue wiggle wart that I had on my crankbait rod. You could not pick three more different colors, and it did not matter because they were eating it. All of those baits ran 10ft, and all are a pretty small profile, so I think those were the keys.

I have ran into the same thing before with jigs, where the color of the jig did not matter, so long as you used the right trailer.

It seems like everytime I start to convince myself color is not as important as I thought a buddy will wind up whacking them on a color I do not have and they won't touch the same lure in a different color

Nice fish. That's what I love about that lake. You can find a school of nice fish like that and make a bad day a great day. I'm hopping to get up there and try out the new toy on Sunday.

As far as color not mattering, If I could convince myself that color doesn't matter then I would save a ton of money each year. :D But i have the same issue, someone gets them on a color i don't have and i run out and buy that color.

I have the opposite problem...if I catch them on a bait then I need to buy every color they make

I have been better lately though.

I got an airbrush over the winter so i have been painting some up to match the lures I like. We will have to see if it works.

Those are some great looking largemouth. Crankbaits you say. I don't use crankbaits too much, but if I'm going to get bass like that on them I might have to start using them some more.

Man, that sounded like you guys really got into a solid school of fish. This time of year I believe that color is less important than other times. When the feeding frenzy starts each day it seems like the color doesn't matter. If the fish in the school stop hitting one color and you throw another color they will hit again. You have to love the pre-spawn. I am not a big color guy period. I try to stick to several patterns and colors.

Air brushing lures is defidently the way to go. I had a ton of lures that the color just didn't seem to work, so i painted them last year to colors that had proven successful for me and now I have more lures that accually catch fish. Plus, it saves a bunch of money.
